Delegation Day 1

Yesterday the delegation met for the first time in a venue looking out over Casbah Square on the avenue Borguida at the heart of the revolution. The streets seemed quiet and bustling but the ministry of the interior was still surrounded by razor wire and tanks. The delegation comprises of UK and US and Turkish lawyers, academics from the School of Oriental and African Studies and Tunisian activists and journalists, some returned from exile for the first time in 20 years.  The delegation learnt from our Tunisia hosts about just some of the repressions by the Ben Ali regime and the problems facing the opposition now he has been ousted from power. In particular, how the new political parties will resolve their ideological differences now that their common enemy has been removed and how Tunisia citizens can avoid their public media being taken over by vested corporate interests.
